不手折而 落者惜常 我念之 秋黄葉乎 挿頭鶴鴨

手折(たを)らずて 散(ち)りなば惜(を)しと 我(わが)が思(おも)ひし 秋(あき)の黄葉(もみち)を かざしつるかも

Taworazu te chiri naba woshi to wa ga omoi shi aki no momichi wo kazashi tsuru kamo.

意味

手折らないでいて、散ってしまったら惜しいことだと思っていた、秋(あき)の黄葉(もみち)を、手折って髪にかざることができました。

・天平１０年(西暦７３８)１０月１７日に橘奈良麻呂(たちばなのならまろ)が催(もよお)した宴席(えんせき)で詠まれた歌です。

- rough meaning: I was thinking it would be a shame if the yellow leaves scattered before I fold them by hand. But finally I have fold the yellow leaves of autumn and put them on my hair.

補足

この歌の題詞に、「橘朝臣奈良麻呂(たちばなのあそんならまろ)、集宴(しゅうえん)を結ぶ歌十一首」とあります。
