山藍(やまあい) Yamaai(Mercurialis leiocarpa, Mountain indigo)
山藍はトウダイグサ科の宿根草で、山地に群生します。夏の初めころに緑色の小さな花をつけます。飛鳥時代には摺り染めの染料とされたようで一般的には灰色がかった青緑と考えられていますが、決定的ではありません。山藍の擦り染めは色落ちしやすいのが欠点で、平安時代以降には藍染が利用されるようになりました。
- Yamaai is a perennial plant of the Euphorbiaceae family that grows in clusters in mountainous areas. It produces small green flowers in early summer. It seems to have been used as a dye for rubbing dye after the Asuka period. Its color is generally considered to be a grayish blue-green, but this is not conclusive. The dye of rubbing Yamaai is that the color fades easily, and indigo dyeing began to be used after the Heian period.
