朴(ほお) Hoo(Magnolia)

モクレン科モクレン属の落葉高木の「朴(ほお)の木」です。山に生え、大きいものでは２０メートルを超えます。５～６月頃に大きな白い花を咲かせます。昔から、この葉を食べ物を包むのに使ってきました。

- Hoo is a magnolia family magnolia deciduous tree. It grows in the mountains and over 20 meters for large ones. Large white flowers bloom around May to June. Since ancient times, this leaf has been used to wrap food.

朴(ほお)を詠んだ歌

万葉集ではこの花を詠んだのではなく、「ほほがしは」として葉を詠んでいます。ちなみに、「かしは」は、食べ物を盛る葉のことです。

- In the Manyoshu, this flower is not written, but the leaves are written as "Hohogashiha" which means a leaf of Hoonoki(Magnolia). “Kashiwa(gashiwa)” of "Hohogashiha" means a leaf for serving food.

4205: 皇祖の遠御代御代はい重き折り酒飲みきといふぞこのほほがしは
