棗(なつめ) Natsume(Jujube/Chinese date)
クロウメモドキ(黒梅擬)科の棗(なつめ)です。初夏に淡黄色の小さな花を咲かせ、秋に楕円形の実が熟します。皮ごと食べられますが、甘露煮にしたり、乾燥させて食べたりもします。他の樹木より遅く、初夏になって芽を出すことからこの名(なつめ:夏芽)がついたとのことです｡「棗」という漢字は、中国名から来たものです｡
- Natsume is a jujube(Chinese date) of the buckthorn family. Small pale yellow flowers bloom in early summer, and oval fruits ripen in autumn. You can eat the whole skin. You can also boil it in candied or dry it and eat it. It is said that this name (Natsume: summer bud) was given because it sprouts in early summer. The kanji "棗" comes from a Chinese name.
