遠江(とおとうみ) Totoumi
琵琶湖(びわこ)を近江(ちかつあふみ:ちかつおうみ)というのに対して都から遠い浜名湖(はまなこ)のある国は遠江(とおとうみ)と呼ばれます。今の静岡県の西部域です。なお、あふみ(淡海)は淡水湖(たんすいこ)の意味です。
- Lake Biwa was called Chikatsu-Omi(Lake in the vicinity), while Lake Hamana which is far from the Capital Nara was called Toto-Omi(Lake in a distant place). It is today's western part of the Shizuoka prefecture. In addition, "Omi" means freshwater lake, and Lake Hamana is said to have been a freshwater lake in ancient times.

万葉集には2首に詠まれています。3429番歌の「引佐細江(いなさほそえ)」は、浜名湖の北部の地名です。
