家尓去而 奈尓乎将語 安之比奇能 山霍公鳥 一音毛奈家

家に行きて 何を語らむ あしひきの 山霍公鳥(やまほととぎす) 一声(ひとこゑ)も鳴け

- Ihe ni yukite Nani wo kataramu Ashihiki-no Yama-hototogisu Hitokoye mo nake.

意味 Meaning

家に帰ったら何の話(みやげ話)をしようか。山の霍公鳥(ほととぎす)よ、一声でもいいから鳴いておくれよ。

- rough meaning: I wonder what we should talk about as a souvenir stories when we get home. Hototogisu of the mountains, please chirp even if it's just for once. (The author wrote this poem to express his regret that the Hototogisu did not sing.)

この歌の題詞に、「霍公鳥(ほととぎす)の喧(な)かぬことを恨(うら)むる歌一首」とあります。
