新 年乃婆自米尓 豊乃登之 思流須登奈良思 雪能敷礼流波

新(あらた)しき 年の初めに 豊(とよ)の年 しるすとならし 雪(ゆき)の降れるは

- Aratashiki Toshi no hajime ni Toyo no toshi Shirusu to narashi Yuki no fureru ha.

意味

新しい年の初めに、今年の豊かな実りの予兆なのでしょう。雪(ゆき)が降っているのは。

・雪は豊作をもたらすと考えられていたようですね。

- At the beginning of a new year, it may be a sign of a rich harvest this year. It's snowing.(It was believed that snow would bring a good harvest.)

補足

天平１８年(西暦７５６年)１月、雪(ゆき)が降り積もったので、橘諸兄(たちぱなのもろえ)が諸王たちをひきつれて元正天皇(げんしょうんのう)の御所の雪かきをしました。そこで、元正天皇は橘諸兄たちを招いて酒宴をひらきました。そのときに、天皇が「この雪を題材にして歌を詠みなさい」といわれたのです。この命に応じて、橘諸兄(たちばなのもろえ)、紀清人(きのきよひと)、紀男梶(きのおかじ)、葛井諸会(ふじゐのもろあい)、大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)が歌を詠みました。

- In January 18th year of Tenpyo (756 A.D.), snow had piled up, so Tachibana-no-Moroe led the kings to shovel the snow from Empress Gensho palace. Then Empress Gensho invited the Tachibana -no-Moroe and others to a drinking party. At that time, the Emperor said, "You should compose poems about this snow". In response to her order, several people each made a poem.
