粟路之 野嶋之前乃 濱風尓 妹之結 紐吹返

淡路(あはぢ)の 野島(のしま)が崎の 浜風に 妹(いも)が結びし 紐(ひも)吹き返す

- Ahaji no Noshima ga saki no Hamakaze ni Imo ga musubishi Himo fuki kahesu.

意味

淡路の野島(のしま)の崎の浜風が、妻が結んでくれた紐(ひも)を吹き返しています。

・当時は、男女が長く逢えない時に、互いに相手の紐を結んで無事を祈るような習わしがあったそうです。

- rough meaning: The sea breeze from the cape of Noshima in Awaji is blowing back the string that my wife tied up.(In Manyo period, when men and women were unable to see each other for a long time, there was a custom of tying each other's strings together and praying for their safety.)
