水傳 礒乃浦廻乃 石上乍自 木丘開道乎 又将見鴨

よみ

水(みな)伝(つた)ふ 礒(いそ)の浦廻(うらみ)の 岩つつじ 茂(も)く咲く道を またも見むかも

- Mina tsutafu Iso no urami no Iwa-Tsutsuji Moku saku michi wo mata mo mimu kamo.

意味

水が流れている岩にたくさん咲いているつつじが見えるこの道をまた見ることができるのだろうか。

持統天皇３年(西暦６８９年)４月に２８歳という若さで亡くなった草壁皇子(くさかべのみこ)を偲(しの)んで舎人(とねり)たちが詠んだ２３首のうちのひとつです。

- rough meaning: Will we be able to see this road again, where we can see many azaleas blooming on the rocks where the water is flowing? (This is one of poems are 23 poems composed by Toneri in memory of Prince Kusakabe who died at the young age of 28 in April of the 3rd year of Emperess Jito , 689 AD. )
