万葉集には、天皇から庶民までの多くの人々の歌が載っています。作者名がわかっていない歌の多くは、庶民などの歌だと考えられています。
- Manyoshu contains poems of many people from the Emperor to the common people. Many of the poems whose author names are not known are considered to be the poems made by the ordinary people.

防人(さきもり)の歌 Poems of Sakimori
防人(さきもり)は、筑紫(ちくし)・壱岐(いき)・対馬(つしま)などの北九州の防衛にあたった兵士たちのことです。家族と離れ離れになる悲しさや、夫が遠くに行ってしまう悲しさ・不安・無事を祈る気持ちを詠んだ歌がほとんどです。

遣新羅使(けんしらぎし) Kenshiragishi
遣新羅使(けんしらぎし)は日本が朝鮮半島の新羅(しらぎ)に派遣した使節(しせつ)です。万葉集にも遣新羅使たちが詠んだ多くの歌が載っています。
- Kenshiragishi is an envoy dispatched by Japan to Silla on the Korean Peninsula. The Manyoshu contains many poems written by envoys to Silla.
遣唐使(けんとうし) Kentoushi
遣唐使(けんとうし)は日本が唐に派遣した使節(しせつ)です。万葉集にも遣唐使にかかわる歌が載っています。
- Kentoshi is an envoy sent by Japan to Tang China. Manyoshu contains poems related to envoys to the Tang Dynasty.
