世間を 常なきものと 今ぞ知る 奈良の都の うつろふ見れば

意味 Meaning

世の中が無情なものだと今こそ思い知りました。奈良の都が廃れていくのを見ると。

- rough meaning: Seeing the decline of the capital of Nara, I now realize that the world is heartless.

補足 Notes

・この歌を含む１０４４番歌の題詞には「寧樂京(ならのみやこ)の荒墟(こうきょ:荒れた跡)を傷(いた)み惜しんで作る歌三首 [作者不審]」とあります。

・天平１２年(西暦７４０年)、平城京から恭仁京への遷都がなされました。その際、大極殿(だいこくでん)などが解体・移築されたため、平城京はあっというまに荒廃がすすんだようです。
