天降(あも)りつく 天(あめ)の香具山(かぐやま) 霞(かすみ)立つ 春(はる)に至れば 松風(まつかぜ)に 池波(いけなみ)立ちて 桜花(さくらばな) 木(こ)の暗茂(くれしげ)に 沖辺(おきへ)には 鴨妻(かもつま)呼ばひ 辺(へ)つ辺に あぢ群(むら)騒き ももしきの 大宮人(おほみやひと)の 退(まか)り出て 遊ぶ船には 楫棹(かぢさを)も なくて寂しも 漕(こ)ぐ人なしに

意味

天から降ってきた天(あめ)の香具山(かぐやま)は、霞(かすみ)が立つ春(はる)になると、松風(まつかぜ)に池が波立ち、桜花(さくらばな)は木陰が暗くなるほど茂り、池の沖には鴨(かも)が妻を呼び、岸にはあぢが群がって騒ぎ、大宮人が退出して、彼らが遊んでいた舟には梶(かじ)も棹(さお)もなくて、漕ぐ人が居なくて寂しいことです。

- rough meaning: In the spring when the haze rises in the heavenly Kaguyama that has fallen from heaven, the pond undulates in the pine wind, and the cherry blossoms grow thick so the shades of trees are dark. The flock of Aji call their wifes at the shore of the pond, the Omiya-bito(people who work in the palace) leave, and the boat they were playing with has no rod nor paddle. I feel lonely because there is no one to row the boat.
