– There are 20 volumes of Manyoshu. An overview is given here from Volume 1 to Volume 20. For the poems of each volume, please refer to the page of each volume in the following list.
第１巻(０００１～００８４) Volume 1
第一巻は雑歌(ぞうか)として天皇の時代ごとに歌が整理されています。また、額田王(ぬかたのおおきみ)や柿本人麻呂(かきのもとのひとまろ)などの有名な歌が沢山あります。
- The first volume is organized as "Zouka"(miscellaneous poems) for era of each emperor. There are many poems of famous poets such as Nukata-no-Ookimi and Kakinomoto-no-hitomaro.
第２巻(００８５～０２３４) Volume 2
第二巻は相聞(そうもん)と挽歌(ばんか)で構成されています。天皇の時代ごとに分類し、それぞれ年代順に載せています。柿本人麻呂(かきのもとのひとまろ)のすぐれた挽歌(ばんか)があります。
- Volume 2 consists of "Somon" and "Banka". Poems are categorized by the era of the emperor and listed in chronological order. Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro's excellent Banka(an elegy or a dirge) is in this volume.
第３巻(０２３５～０４８３) Volume 3
雑歌(ぞうか)・譬喩(ひゆ)歌・挽歌(ばんか)から成っています。
- Volume 3 consists of "Zouka", "Hiyuka" and "Banka".
第４巻(０４８４～０７９２) Volume 4
相聞(そうもん)だけで構成されています。大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)と女性たちとの贈答歌が多く載せられています。
- Volume 4 consists solely of Soumonka (love poems). Many of the poems are Zoutouka (exchanged poems) between Ōtomo-no-Yakamochi and various women.
第５巻(０７９３～０９０６) Volume 5
雑歌(ぞうか)だけの巻です。大伴旅人(おおとものたびと)、山上憶良(やまのうえのおくら)に関わる歌が多いですね。
- Volume 5 consists solely of Zouka (miscellaneous poems). Many of the poems in this volume are associated with Ōtomo-no-Tabito and Yamanoue-no-Okura.
第６巻(０９０７～１０６７) Volume 6
すべて雑歌(ぞうか)で構成されています。笠金村、山部赤人(やまべのあかひと)などが代表的な歌人です。吉野(よしの)などへの行幸の時の歌が多いのが特徴です。
- Volume 6 is composed entirely of Zouka(miscellaneous poems). Representative poets include Kasa-no-Kanamura and Yamabe-no-Akahito. A distinctive feature of this volume is that it contains many poems written during imperial visits to places like Yoshino.
第７巻(１０６８～１４１７) Volume 7
雑歌(ぞうか)・譬喩(ひゆ)歌・挽歌(ばんか)から成っています。いずれも作者不明なものが多いのですが、柿本人麿(かきのもとのひとまろ)の歌集にあるとされている歌がかなりあります。
- Volume 7 consists of Zouka(miscellaneous poems), Hiyuka(metaphorical poems), and Banka(poems mourning the dead). The authors of many of the poems are unknown, but a considerable number are said to be from the poetry collection of Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro.
第８巻(１４１８～１６６３) Volume 8
歌を四季ごとに分けて載せています。各々、雑歌(ぞうか)・相聞歌(そうもんか)があります。
- Volume 8 is a collection of poems separated by season, with both Zouka(miscellaneous poems) and Soumonka(love poems) included in each season.
第９巻(１６６４～１８１１) Volume 9
雑歌(ぞうか)・相聞歌(そうもんか)・挽歌(ばんか)から成っています。各々はだいたい年代順になっています。
- Volume 9 is composed of Zouka (miscellaneous poems), Soumonka (love poems), and Banka (poems mourning the dead). The poems in each section are arranged in roughly chronological order.
第１０巻(１８１２～２３５０) Volume 10
歌を四季ごとに分けて載せています。各々、雑歌(ぞうか)・相聞歌(そうもんか)があります。特に、七夕を詠んだ歌が１３２首もあるのが特徴的です。
- Volume 10 contains poems arranged by season. Each season includes Zouka (miscellaneous poems) and Soumonka (love poems). A notable feature of this volume is the 132 poems dedicated to the Tanabata festival.
第１１巻(２３５１～２８５０) Volume 11
旋頭歌(せどうか)、正述心緒(ただにおもいをのぶ)、寄物陳思(ものによせておもいをのぶ)、問答などから構成されています。柿本人麻呂歌集からの歌も多いです。
- Volume 11 is composed of Sedoka(poem format for two people to sing), Tadaniomoiwonobu(express one's feelings), Mononiyosete-omoiwonobu (express one's thoughts by entrusting things), Mondouka(questions and answers on someone who cares), and Hiyu(metaphors).
第１２巻(２８５１～３２２０) Voluem 12
数種類の区分で構成されていますが、作者が不明な歌が多く載っています。また、歌垣(うたがき:男女が歌を掛け合いながら求愛する風習)の様子をうかがわせる歌も載っています。
- Volume 12 is comprised of several categories, featuring many poems whose authors are unknown. It also includes poems that offer glimpses into the practice of Utagaki(a custom where men and women exchange poems in courtship).
第１３巻(３２２１～３３４７) Volume 13
長歌と反歌のセットが多く、物語性のある歌や、歴史的な出来事を詠んだ歌が特徴です。柿本人麻呂歌集の歌もあります。
- Volume 13 is characterized by numerous sets of chōka(long poems) and hanka(envoys to long poems), often telling stories or describing historical events. This volume also contains poems from the collection of Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro.
第１４巻(３３４８～３５７７) Volume 14
第十四巻は、東歌(あずまうた:東国地方の人々の歌)とタイトルされ、上総・下総・常陸・信濃・遠江・駿河・伊豆・相模・武蔵・陸奥などの国々の歌が収録されています。
- Volume 14 is titled "Azuma-uta" (poems from the eastern provinces) and includes poems from regions such as Kazusa, Shimousa, Hitachi, Shinano, Tōtōmi, Suruga, Izu, Sagami, Musashi, and Mutsu.
第１５巻(３５７８～３７８５) Volume 15
第十五巻は、大きく二つの歌の集まりからできていますが、きちんと整理はされていない感じです。一つは新羅(しらぎ)に遣わされた人たちの歌で、もう一つは中臣宅守(なかとみのやかもり)と狭野弟上娘子(さののおとがみのおとめ)との贈答歌(ぞうとうか)です。
- Volume 15 consists of two large collections of poems, though they don't seem to be systematically organized. One collection contains poems by those dispatched to Silla, and the other features zoutouka (poems that exchange feelings between people) between Nakatomi-no-Yakamori and Sano-no-Otogami-no-Otome.
第１６巻(３７８６～３８８９) Voluem 16
伝説や言い伝えの歌、戯笑歌(ぎしょうか:滑稽な内容を歌った和歌)などから構成されています。
- Volume 16 is made up of poems about legends and folklore, as well as gishōka (waka poems with comical content).
第１７巻(３８９０～４０３１) Volume 17
この第十七巻以降は、大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)の歌日記と言われています。年月の順に歌が載せられています。越中(現在の富山県)の国守として赴任していた時期の歌が多く、故郷を思う気持ちや、任地での豊かな自然、人との交流などを詠んだ歌が特徴です。
- From Volume 17 onward, the collection is often considered the poetic diary of Otomo-no-Yakamochi. The poems are arranged in chronological order. Many of them are from his time as the provincial governor of Etchū (present-day Toyama Prefecture), characterized by expressions of longing for his hometown, descriptions of the rich nature in his assigned post, and poems about his interactions with people there.
第１８巻(４０３２～４１３８) Volume 18
特にこれといった分類はされていませんが、大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)の歌が多く、越中に在任中の宴会での歌や、風物詩を詠んだ歌が多く見られます。
- Volume 18 doesn't have a specific classification, but it heavily features poems by Otomo-no-Yakamochi. Many of these were composed at banquets during his tenure in Etchū, or they depict seasonal scenery.
第１９巻(４１３９～４２９２) Volume 19
孝謙天皇(こうけんてんのう)時代の歌を載せています。全体の３分の２を大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)の歌が占めていて、越中での任期を終え、都に戻る頃の歌や、様々な出来事を詠んだ歌が収録されています。
- Volume 19 contains poems from the era of Empress Kōken. Otomo-no-Yakamochi's poems account for two-thirds of this volume, including those from around the time he finished his term in Etchū and returned to the capital, as well as poems describing various events.
第２０巻(４２９３～４５１６) Volume 20
防人(さきもり)の歌が多く載せられています。万葉集最後に掲載されている歌は、大伴家持(おおとものやかもち)の歌です。
- Volume 20 is the final volume and contains many Sakimori(frontier guard) poems. The very last poem featured in the Manyoshu is by Otomo-no-Yakamochi.
